National Night Out builds good will in communities

By kristinemagnuson, August 3, 2010 4:02 pm

Nation-wide, it’s National Night Out this evening, which means a great opportunity to get out and make connections in your local community. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) says its National Night Out – now in its 27th year – is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Here are just a few of the National Night Out events taking place in San Francisco this August 3, 2010:

Tenderloin Station National Night Out
Children’s Playground,
570 Ellis St., San Francisco
starts at 6 p.m.

Ingleside Station National Night Out
2800 Alemany Blvd., San Francisco
starts at 5 p.m.

Hayes Valley Station National Night Out
Hayes Valley Playground Basketball Court, Hayes and Buchanan
starts at 5 p.m.

You can also check with your local community neighborhood association or district police office to find a celebration in your district or city if it’s not listed here.

Happy 33rd to Haight-Ashbury Fair!

By kristinemagnuson, June 12, 2010 3:51 pm

This Sunday - June 13, 2010 - the long-running Haight-Ashbury Street Fair is turning a mere 3 years and 3 decades young. The fair highlights music, bands, funky posters and art, the usual hippie-street-chic, drug-enhanced counterculture, and other urban fare to confuse, delight and stir up the senses.

While entrance and entertainment are free, hosting and promotion of the ‘Long Playing’ Haight-Ashbury Street Fair are not. The nonprofit org responsible for the fair hopes you’ll donate to the cause, if you can, or help support future fairs by shopping from its HASF store online. Vendors selling food and wares at the fair are listed on the site as well.

HASF recommends, above all else, that you take public transportation since parking is very limited. And it’s going to be a hot one, too, so slather on the sunscreen, bring your own H20 and party down!

Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the fair sprawls along Haight St. (between Stanyan and Ashbury) and extends from Waller to Oak (both parallel to Haight St.).

Just a friendly reminder from SF Engage that today, June 8, 2010 is election day.

Polls remain open until 8 p.m. tonight. If you received and completed an absentee ballot, it’s too late to mail your ballot, but it’s not too late to bring it to your assigned polling location (which should should be listed on the back of your voter information pamphlet).
